The Faces of East Sacramento tells the story of our community through the people who live here and know it best - one face, one voice at a time.
Meet Shannon Ross! Thank you Shannon for taking the time to share some of your thoughts about East Sacramento and a few things about yourself.
Question: How long have you lived in East Sacramento?
Answer: I first moved to east Sacramento in 1996. the house was at 45th & B and cost $156,900.
Q: What attracted you to East Sac?
A: My friend, Erin was house hunting in east Sac and she brought me along. I had lived in Sacramento for five years but hadn’t known about this neighborhood. I fell in love with the old homes, large trees and the neighborhood parks.
Q: What keeps you here?
A: Although we Iive on a different street now-closer to 53rd street- we still love the same things about east sac. The walkability is my favorite thing about the neighborhood. We raised our family here and enjoyed events at McKinley Library, Pops in the Park and Run to Feed the Hungry.
Q: What’s your favorite restaurant in or around East Sac? What do you like most about it?
A: My husband and I find it really difficult to eat out in east sac as we have been vegan/plant based for over seven years. We enjoy the New Kathmandu Kitchen on J Street. And really miss El Amigo which was on Folsom Blvd. Thankfully there are lots of options in midtown and downtown.
Q: What do you do for a living? What led to your current career or occupation? I am the Client Asset and Property Manager at Downs Fiduciary Services. Shannon Downs is also an east Sac resident and has had her company since 2016. I began working there in 2019. (Yes, we have two Shannons at our office) Professional Fiduciaries manage trusts, probates and special needs trusts. Helping families through difficult times is a privilege and I’m glad to be a part of that. I have also been a member of the Friends of McKinley Library board for over 20 years.
Q: What’s at the top of your bucket list?
A: As a new empty nester we are looking forward to more traveling. I recently completed a bucket list item on a trip to Malta to enjoy the islands and meet my relatives.
Q: What do you like to do for fun?
A: I enjoy swimming and being outdoors, hiking or gardening. I am a big reader and recently joined a book club.
Q: If you could wave a magic wand and change anything about East Sacramento, what would it be?
A: I wish there was less traffic and speeding vehicles through our neighborhood. I also wish that the parks department would replant the trees that have come down during storms. The Parks Department is definitely spread thinly throughout town and it is a shame that there isn’t more preventative maintenance done on the established trees before we lose them.
